Hey peeps, I'm back after what seems like an extended absence but was really only a week. I was teaching full time this week so I took a lot of naps but I did find some time to continue with operation-room-spruce-up. If you remember, my room used to look like this...
Part one, the 'bedside table' and overhead lamp.
There's a bit of a story for each of these items but I'll start with the 'bedside table'. In the great room rearranging I chose to put my bed in a place where there is no room to put a bedside table so I had to come up with an alternative. A few weeks back I got it into my head that what I needed was a drawer that I could mount on the wall and use as a substitutionary bedside table. I figured this wouldn't be too hard to find so I set off thrifting. I went to every store I could think of, asking if they had any damaged pieces with drawers they wanted to get rid of. When that didn't work I tried playing the eccentric artist card, telling them I was an doing a project and needed one but I still had no luck. My friend Beth and I discussed dumpster diving outside a thrift store but arrived at the conclusion that it was illegal and not really worth the ticket if we were caught. So on the drive home from a party one night I took only back alleys, paying special attention to the dumpsters behind large apartment buildings where deadbeat people tend to dump old furniture. Jackpot, I totally had my pick from about five different pieces of furniture so I happily hauled the best drawer into my car around 12am. In the days that followed I sanded, filled holes, primed & painted, drilled holes and then added a few Anthro knobs to top it off. I've been happily enjoying tea in bed and Burt's Bees lip balm in the middle of the night without having to leave my bed ever since. I still have plans to hang a few tiny frames inside the drawer but I haven't quite gotten around to it.
This light fixture is another story. Due to the smallish size of my drawer/nightstand it wasn't very practical to set a lamp on it and I need a lamp for before bed reading. On a trip to Ikea I had purchased a hanging lamp but when I got it home it looked super disgusting in my room, too plasticy and modern, ug. Fortunately I had also purchased a super cute white plant pot and I decided to put two and two together. I had a hard time tracking down a place that was willing to drill glass for me but I persevered and the next day after a trip to the glass shop I had a lovely lamp for above my bed. I just swiped the cord and socket from my existing lamp and chucked the (disgusting) plastic shade.
The big project for my room was re-painting not one but three dresser/stands that I decided I wanted in a row on the far wall of my room. I got a bit tired of the white one with the red flower that I'd painted last year and really if I'm honest, I need my room in every new place to de different. I had one sewing chest from my granny, a night stand from a thrift store and a cast off cabinet from my Mom. After a half hour of sanding, two coats of primer on each and two coats of paint on each this is what they look like.
I also added that white faux library drawer cube on top of the smallest night stand to balance the heights out.
It was a lot of work but Beth helped out a lot, as did Valentino.
The last new fixture in the room is this mirror, purchased by Jill's parents for our vintage mirror wall in the living room. That was before we decided to go with ornate gold though so this one found it's way to my room after a quick coat of white spray paint. Now I just need some pictures on the walls...
